by the senate. a treaty that was meant to encourage other countries to be more like the u.s. on equal rights of the disabled. if other countries adopted better treatment of their disabled citizens, the idea is that disabled americans who visit or live in other countries would also benefit. 125 countries ratified the treaty. it was supported by george bush, signed by the current president, and has support from both sides of the aisle like john mccain and past republican leaders like bob dole, himself a world war ii veteran. he was wheeled onto the senate floor, you can see, for the vote he hoped to see the treaty ratified. instead after pressure from special interest groups, 38 republicans some vowing to support the treaty voted no. one of the loudest critics was the home school legal defense association, the hslda. it's a powerful lob by whose leader you're about to meet. they had some very strong things to say about the treaty, but the notion was basically this. if it were to pass, they said, the u.n. treaty would somehow let the u.n. mandate how parents of disabled kids in america cared fo

what to do. the fact of the matter is this treaty raises the world to the standard of the u.s. doesn't require the u.s. to change its standards at all and doesn't in any way give the u.n. power to do anything in this country. but i think it's -- all you have to do is say u.n. and people on the right get very ex or sized. rick santorum helped lead the opposition to this treaty. i think he's out of step with the american people, out of step by the way on this tax cuts for the rich stuff. you know, bobby jindal said today and i that you say it was remarkable, we're in danger of becoming the party that defends the rich, anti-medicare, antisocial security, and there's no future in that kind of republican party nor is there one in a party that's anti-handicapped. >> let me go to john on this because you and i, john, i think we all know people in our business, in the journalism world, and in consulting who have handicaps, they are in wheelchairs but they raise a ruckus effectively if there's some facility that doesn't allow them access or a reasonable way of getting through that situation.

they have a man in their custody they believe is connected to the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi on september 11th and killed four americans including ambassador chris stephens. according to an e judicial source the man is identified as being in his late 30s. he is known to egyptian intelligence officials for his connections in the past with extremist groups in egypt and libya and his connections with groups in afghanistan and iraq. after the country's revolution he managed to escape from a prison where he was being held. it was shortly afterwards he emerged on this scene for egyptian intelligence officials who say he began trading in arms between libya into egypt and then ultimately onto gaza. right now there's no indication what role he may have played precisely in the attack on the u.s. consulate. he is being held in egyptian custody. there were some conflicting reports as to when he was actually detained. some suggested he was arrested on friday morning. there were other reports suggesting he had been arrested several weeks ago. right now he remains in egyptian custody. he ha

and losses have been picking up in the last hour or so as we've seen renewed concern about the u.s. fiscal cliff whether a negotiation could be reached. we saw some optimism in the asian session overnight. i want to draw your attention to the most important story potentially for 20123 and that's what's happening in japan. you guys may recall yesterday it was up .9%. this market has been on a tear this year. it's up more than 20 one of the best asset classes. the yen continues to weaken. there's two reasons why we're focusing here. we got weak economic data out of japan. industrial production decline. we saw core consumer prices decline. we can show you, though, what's happening with the yen. we're seeing the new finance minister coming out and saying to other countries, you know, look, we're not trying to materially weaken our yen and you have no place to accuse us of doing so. he says a strong dollar policy would benefit the u.s. very much so. and, again, might benefit japan, too, because that will make it a lot easier to get that yen lower. today, the dollar/yen is up .2% because it's im
